In mid-December the temperatures are already starting to rise where you need an "icebreaker" and that's how the "Eisbrecher» dropped anchor at the Basler Z7 from far away Bavaria, because the gentlemen were on a big anniversary tour. It's been ten years since Alexander "Alexx" Wesselsky and Jochen "Noel Pix" Seibert parted ways with "Megaherz" and "Eisbrecher» brought into being. «Megaherz» still exists today, but while the former comrades-in-arms had to be content with a respectable 19th place with their album «Götterdämmerung», «Eisbrecher» secured third place in the charts with their fifth studio album «Die Hölle muss Warten», which was released almost at the same time. On this Friday evening, December 13th, a lot of fans found their way to the Z7 to celebrate the birthday together with the band and the support "A Life Divided" and both bands really heated up the well-filled Z7.
Apparently, almost two hours before the start of the concert, hardcore fans in Pratteln were standing with their frozen legs in the icy minus temperatures, which only made me shake my head pityingly, since this is not a teen band and if you choose it yourself, After being there so early, you shouldn't complain about the cold, but rather let the icebreaker do its job. So it happened that the Z7 was already well filled with the special guests. The Munich "A Life Divided" convinced with catchy rock, which they embellished with electronic elements in many parts. Jürgen Plangger and his band mates knew how to captivate the concert-goers who were impatiently waiting for the headliners and were certainly able to win some new fans that evening.
"A Life Divided" proved to be in a good party mood right after a long intro with "The Lost" from this year's long player "The Great Escaape". "It Ain't No Good" was applauded vigorously and "Words" was followed by a crisp shouter from the 2011 longplayer "Passenger", before the melodic "Feel" served up poppy set pieces in a rock guise. "Hey You" sent a guitar hurricane along with a drum tornado across the stage under thunderstorms of light, before the same was bathed in blue light for the VNV NATION cover "Perpetual". "A Life Divided" let it rip dark-metallic and you had to listen closely to recognize the original song, although the guys really didn't do a bad job. After all, this formation has been around for ten years and colleague Plangger, who has also been plucking the guitar on "Eisbrecher" since 2006, certainly knew how to move his audience to "The Last Dance".
There were NDH standards for the dance floor, in order to finally ask the audience about the text security with the varied "Heart On Fire". There were obviously a lot of repeat offenders romping around here and so it was not surprising that there was plenty of well-deserved applause after a good half hour. In my opinion, the band's sound is absolutely top class, but Jürgen Plangger's voice is not my cup of tea. Not that it's bad, not at all, it's just a bit too bright for me personally, so in my opinion it rather disturbs the band's sound than complements it. But fortunately tastes differ. "A Life Divided" is a great live band, there's nothing to complain about, but it's not my case, but you should see and hear Jürgen again after a little breather. «A Life Divided» kicked off like they were the headliner from the first minute and the final applause was definitely headliner worthy.
Accompanied by a disco from the 70s, it was time for a break before the A-Team's theme tune let the suspense rise again. The two oversized fists positioned at the two edges of the stage lit up in a deep red and a computer voice greeted the numerous audience. Finally the main actors found their way onto the stage and the gentlemen offered a two-hour up and down of old and new songs that it just banged. So the party started with "Kein Pity" and in the following set they focused on highlights of the last decade and so it continued with "Welcome to Nothing", "Adrenaline" and "Antibodies". Before the anthemic “Eyes below zero”, the stage was drenched in red light and more up-to-date fare was offered for the first time. "Amok" was then able to set a visual highlight again with its choreo with the almost veteran barrels and "Eiszeit", in which the polar equipment was used after all, also seemed familiar. The "Leider" that follows still rocks, and "Prototype" was applauded at least as euphorically. The joy of playing was noticeable to everyone on stage and the spectators and band increased from song to song.
Compared to the "Hell Must Wait" tour, the set list had been modified and expanded and peppered with eloquent introductions by Alexx, who now had his audience completely in his hands, "Engel" continued. The great, self-titled band anthem, which can be found in a 2013 version on the "10 Jahre Eisbrecher" single and for which Alexx now grabbed his captain's hat and ice axes, introduced the next classic section: This was supplemented by "Schwarze widow», to which a little hard liquor was handed. It continued with "Forget-me-not", "Herzdieb" and "This is German" and ended the regular part of the show brilliantly as a German-rocking Musikantenstadl with columns of smoke, which, after only a short break, found its deserved continuation in "Heilig". "Crazy" ended with thunderous applause and at this point, of course, could only be topped by "Miststück". But the gentlemen weren't stingy and, after another break, came back with "Immortal for a lifetime". But then it was finally over, even if one or two pieces such as "Can love sin be" would have been fine for my taste. But then again next time.
Many happy faces and a visibly exhausted singer thanked each other and each made their way home. Alexx and Noel Pix have put together an experienced band with their musicians and delivered a successful show, which was particularly convincing due to its varied set list, ensured a full hall and was great fun. A great stage show and you can always look forward to «Eisbrecher», the guys just got it! The guys go full throttle and the audience eats out of singer Alexx's hand from the first note. The man is a stage pig, from whom you almost buy every single cliché. Of course, in addition to his cool acting, he also has a great deal of humor and is quite simply a born entertainer. Icebreakers rocked the stage at its finest. Props were carried onto the stage for almost every song and Alex was eloquent as usual. A great evening and an absolutely worthy journey through 10 years of "icebreakers", which still went a step further and never came to rest. We hope and are happy that things will continue like this, because in 2014 the fans can hope for a new album that should build on the successes of the past few years. With this in mind: Here's to the next 10!
